Washington, DC: A Capitol Police Officer

May 31, 2024

Walking back to our van after touring the National Mall, a US Capitol police officer helped orient us toward Union Station, where we were parked. We struck up a conversation over the course of the next few blocks.

We asked him what the job was like. He said it was mostly good. One of the challenging parts of the job is that operations plans have to be approved by three different entities, none of whom have authority over the others.

Working as an operations planner with the Capitol police is his retirement job after a career as a police officer in Virginia. We commented on that being a heck of a retirement activity. He replied, “I don’t hunt. I don’t fish. I had to do something.”
