The Delaware Capitol police officer manning the security screening at the entrance to the Delaware Legislative Hall was the best tour guide we could have asked for.
We arrived late on a Friday afternoon to a nearly empty building. With the General Assembly not meeting and the tour guides gone for the day, the officer was one of only three people we saw while there. That left him free to talk with us.
In the ten or so minutes we talked with him, he gave us an overview of the building, the General Assembly, the job of a Delaware Capitol police officer, and the dynamics of each. He began to talk about the changes he’s observed from his little corner in the building over the decades. From his outside position inside the building, he was able to notice larger patterns of change in how things worked over the years. We were fairly rapt listening to his gained insights. He gave us a little bit of enlightenment and, more than anything, the enjoyment of a good conversation with a good person who enjoys his job.
