Helpful people abound. Being on this trip has put us in position to encounter them more often. One such person is Emily from Nantucket.
After our 5K on Nantucket Island, we found ourselves six miles outside of town with no means of transportation. We learned there was a free shuttle system with a bus stop about a mile away, so we began walking.
We decided to walk in the opposite direction of where we needed to go, because we were told the nearest bus stop was that way. And, if we missed the bus stop or the bus, the worst-case scenario was we would have to walk two miles to the closest village, Sconset, where we knew we’d be able to catch a bus back to the island’s main town.
We arrived at the bus stop uncertain of when the next bus would come along, and in which direction it would be heading. That’s when we met Emily. Emily told us when the next bus would arrive, that it would be heading to Sconset, and then heading back to town from there.
If that was all she had done, it would have been helpful enough. But she then proceeded to plan our next few hours for us. She told us about what Sconset had to offer – what to do, what to see, where to eat. We had not planned on spending any time in Sconset – we didn’t even know about it beforehand. But we changed course based on Emily’s recommendations, and had a great time in a beautiful setting as a result.
