North Carolina: Sterling the Joggler

Well, we did it, folks. We found the people in the world that are better than everyone else, so the rest of us can just chill out and stop trying. We are not talking about moral superiority. Those like Mother Theresa, Gandhi, and all the other people in the world who do so much for others are still the best of the best. We’re talking about raw skill and ability. So move over, Michael Jordan. The jogglers are here.

Who are the jogglers? We had no idea either before we met Sterling while mingling after our 5K in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jogglers are people who juggle while running (or run while juggling). That’s right. They run races while juggling. And they run them. Jogglers are not people who casually toss balls in the air while moseying around a track. They are serious runners who turn in some serious times. There are people who have joggled 400 meters in 63 seconds, 800 meters in 2:19, a mile in 4:36, and a 5K in 20:04.

A 4:36 mile while juggling! That won’t get you to the Olympics, but it’s fast enough to win most high school races and many open races. And a 20:04 joggling 5K! That won’t get you a college scholarship, but it’s fast enough to beat most adult 5K runners and win some road races.

Maybe we were a bit extreme in telling Michael Jordan to move over, but, well, look up a joggling video for yourself and see how impressed you are. Just the feat of juggling standing still is hard enough. Just the feat of juggling for a full minute sounds tough on its own. Now run a time that most of us mortals will never achieve even after investing sincere effort and hard work and do it WHILE juggling. Come on, folks. These are impressive humans.

Sterling himself is a world champion and world record setting joggler in multiple distance and ball events. He has won 45 world championship gold medals in events including the 3-Ball 60 Meters, 3-Ball 100 Meters, 3-Ball 200 Meters, 3-Ball 400 Meters, 3-Ball 500 Meters, 3-Ball 800 Meters, 3-Ball 1000 Meters, 3-Ball 1500 Meters, 3-Ball 1600 Meters, 3-Ball 5000 Meters, 4-Ball 60 Meters, 4-Ball 100 Meters, 4-Ball 200 Meters, 4-Ball 400 Meters, 5-Ball 100 Meters, 5-Ball 200 Meters, 6-Ball 100 Meters, and more. Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, and Mark Spitz combined do not have as many Olympic gold medals as Sterling has World Championship gold medals.

How can something be both the coolest and the nerdiest thing in the world at the same time? We don’t know. But we know that it is, without question, fantastic. See for yourselves:

And with a big smile and warm glow, there couldn’t have been a better or more enthusiastic ambassador for the sport than Sterling.
