Louisiana: A Few Good Points

They say it’s rude to point.

Well, to every rule there is an exception.

And when done with a purity of heart, boy can it make you feel good.

Anything done with a mean spirit doesn’t feel so good. And anything done with a spirit of joy fills you with it.

We don’t know his name and we don’t know what brought him to that street corner in New Iberia, Louisiana, but as we drove through that intersection, there he was, just sitting there, pointing at cars passing by and doing so with every dang bit of his heart. He had no sign telling you the meaning of his points, but the spirit was clear. With every point, he was like a personal cheerleading service cheering on each passing vehicle to its destination. He had a glimmer in his eye and a smile on his face.

It was a busy intersection in a small town on a late Sunday afternoon.

We gave him a “woot, woot” out the window in response as we passed by. The fire truck behind us gave his horn a gentle honk in reciprocation.

Some find it hard to find meaning in this world or to know what to do to make a difference. Turns out, it doesn’t take much to make this world a better place. Just any one of 10 fingers infused with good spirit and the willingness to sit on a corner to spread it is more than enough to add a little goodness into this world.

That man on the corner made a few good points that we are surely taking with us along our way.
